is a 13-member collective led by composer, performer, and conductor Ester F. Mata, rooted in jazz and contemporary music, with improvisation at its core.

Ester’s compositions are open frameworks where structure and freedom coexist. Rather than only writing for the ensemble, she writes with them: musicians shape the music in real time—developing lines, exchanging cues, and integrating electronics, spoken word, and everyday sounds. Form emerges collectively, moving between the written and the intuitive.

Listening sits at the heart of the ensemble. Roles remain fluid, and the music grows through interaction, creating performances that are alive, responsive, and constantly evolving.

Through this process, 13 Ensemble has developed a sound world that is cinematic and precise—yet open to tension, fragility, and transformation.
